Case Study: Learning Power

Name: Marcus Collins

I am 20 years old and have lived at The Painswick Inn since May 2008. Before this I lived with my step-dad and little sister, he wanted to move into a smaller house so I had to move out. I approached Stroud District Council to tell them that I was homeless and they put me in a Bed and Breakfast in Gloucester for a couple of months. I was then interviewed for a place at the Painswick Inn and accepted so I moved in.

Since I have lived here I did a brick-laying course at Stroud College and am currently trying to get on a plastering course at Gloscat. I also go to ‘The Door’ to do woodwork during the week.

I have just completed my Learning Power qualification with the help of staff at Five Valleys Foyer. I had to do an induction and then pick five units to work through. Some of the units were called ‘Things to do’, ‘Sharing’ – where I learnt how to live in a shared environment, ‘Me and My learning’ – this helped me understand how I learn and gave me lots more confidence.

It was good that I was offered the chance to do Learning Power as I did not get any qualifications at school. Its also good living here because you can go in and chat with the staff if you have any problems, you also get a chance to get involved in things that are going on.
