Phase 1:
• Initial Assessment
• Support Plan
• Engagement and implementation of programmes for personal development and independent living skills
The initial assessment is structured to identify levels of need. This informs the support plan and is the framework for individually focused session work, centring on practical independent living skills such as cooking, budgeting and household maintenance.
Important at this stage is the quality of engagement between young adults and EST staff as any prospective work is contingent on this. This initial phase is, therefore, fundamental in developing trust, respect, motivation and understanding.
Phase 2:
• Structured support
• Continuous review and modification of assessments and methodology
• Where necessary, identification and referral to statutory or other agencies for appropriate assistance or responsibility of care
Phase 2 continues this process by developing support work on key areas of independence. These are individually identified, agreed in Action Plans and tailored to meet service users needs.
During this period, an understanding is developed of more challenging aspects of behaviour. Here the EST is skilled in identifying core issues and appropriate learning approaches and tools. This has proved effective in helping young adults to develop insight, esteem, communication skills and emotional literacy.
For some service users, this process has also proved essential in securing appropriate diagnosis for the promotion of ongoing service provision after moving on to independence.
Phase 3:
• Consolidation of independence skills promoting transition to independence
Phase 3 is where newly acquired social and living skills come together to create

This is seen in their personal growth and progress; and is evidenced in each individual’s learning, Life Skills Qualification, and Support Plan. Support through this period is, therefore, focused on reinforcing practical skills and developing social independence within the broader community.
